What’s the Play for Roanoke?

How is this weekend gonna shape up? Check it out this article to find out!

Driving to Virginia

What’s up 60 Cards readers? I have flown back from São Paulo and I am now driving to Roanoke a mere day later! While this grind may be exhausting for me, the knowledge that i will pass to you in this article is more than worth it.

After seeing how São Paulo played out the metagame has surely changed, but what exactly changed? In this article, I will be going over the expected metagame heading into Roanoke Regionals and I will display my play as well. This weekend is going to shape the landscape for our new Lost Thunder metagame so let’s jump straight into it!

Feeling the Wave

After the results of São Paulo, we can come to a few conclusions about what we can expect for this weekend. With Zoroark GX (SLG; 53)  / Magcargo (CLS; 24)  winning the event, there will be some players who decide to play that deck purely from the hype. While I don’t personally condone this idea, if you are comfortable with ANY deck, it is better to play something that you are comfortable with than not. There seems to be a mutual agreement that Zoroark GX (SLG; 53)  / Decidueye GX (SUM; 12)  / Alolan Ninetales GX (LT; 132)  is going to be a neutral pick from now on. Don’t take that negatively! It is a great pick, but it doesn’t have all auto wins in front of it. You will likely grind out most of your match ups, but you will likely always have a fighting chance. Most players are all Buzzwole GX (CIN; 57)  fans so it is assumed that Buzzwole GX (CIN; 57)  / Lycanroc GX (GRI; 74)  / Alolan Ninetales GX (LT; 132)  will see heavier play than normal. It is an especially good play because it goes toe-to-toe with Blacephalon GX (LT; 52)  / Naganadel (LT; 108)  and it has a favourable match up against most Zoroark GX (SLG; 53)  variants. Blacephalon GX (LT; 52)  / Naganadel (LT; 108)  is the ‘brainless’ play of the weekend, but that’s the biggest compliment the deck can have. It has a slew of solid match ups and the deck has a lower barrier for entry than other skilled decks in the format.

There will be some Granbull (LT; 138)  / Magcargo (CLS; 24)  decks floating around because players are huge fans of Tord Reklev, but it is still a great pick due to its raw power. With all of these decks floating around, the metagame is likely set, but you might run into some other decks that still have some juice left into them. Zoroark GX (SLG; 53)  / Lycanroc GX (GRI; 74)  seems to be the deck, that no matter, players will still pilot that deck until it finally rotated put of the format. I don’t necessarily think that it is a bad deck, but it is surrounded by a field of even / unfavourable match ups. There are also Rayquaza GX (CLS; 109)  decks (with or without Vikavolt (SUM; 52) ), and those decks are in the same boat. They are strong due to their raw power, but there is a lacking quality about them. I have talked to a few players and we have all come to an agreement that Blacephalon GX (LT; 52)  / Naganadel (LT; 108)  is a more consistent deck overall! The main goal on this format is to find a deck that your are COMFORTABLE with and make sure that you have plenty of testing to back your deck choice up with!

My Play for Roanoke

So you might be wondering where I fall on the format wave, right? Well, my top pick should be of no surprise to anyone, it is simply the deck that allowed me to place within the Top Eight of LAIC. That deck is Blacephalon GX (LT; 52)  / Naganadel (LT; 108) . The deck focuses on quick Knock Outs, dominating attacks, and it has a consistent core to back it up! If you are looking to learn more about my thoughts on the deck, I recently wrote an article on this deck, The Blacephalon Bible, so feel free to check out my extensive thoughts on this deck choice. Let’s peep at my list:

I am heavily debating on adding in Choice Band (GRI; 121)  for mirror matches and Alolan Muk (SUM; 58)  / Ditto Prism Star (LT; 154)  for Granbull (LT; 138) , but my list has stayed the same for the week. As always, I will post an updated list if I change this around, but I am feeling confident heading into tomorrow!

As of 7PM Eastern in Roanoke, I have decided to play the following list:

I am comfortable with the abopve changes for the metagame that I expect and I will accept the loss to  Granbull (LT; 138) if I face it. Beyond that, most match ups seem to be improved and I will be submitting this list online soon. If I make any other changes, I will post them as always.

Good Luck This Weekend!

That’s a wrap for today! Best of luck to everyone attending Roanoke, I truly wish you the best at achieving your personally goals this weekend! Oh, just to give everyone an update on my journey, I am now ranked fifth in North America, I feel like I made it! I will be booking my flight to Melbourne, Australia soon and I am glad to go back to one of my favourite countries in the world. With the quarter being reset for Roanoke, I will be pushing hard to do the best that I can possibly do going forward. I will also be working on producing the highest level of content going forward on a consistent basis as I work on a strategic plan to make 60 Cards a better website. During this time of rejuvenation, I welcome any and all feedback that will help see the site succeed. The immediate goals of the site are to streamline regular content, release it on a continuous basis, and provide more articles for the same value. These are hefty goals, but I will be working long hours to make sure I can keep the value of my word.
